How I came about having surgery
How I came about having surgery
I had malocclusion and corroded teeth because I was afraid of going to the dentist. I used to swallow food just chewing with my front teeth, not my molars, so I tended to avoid eating with others. I had wanted to get double jaw surgery for a few years now, and did a lot of research on Internet cafes and blogs and received several hospital consultations, but there was no place that appealed to me and I wondered if the surgeons were any good. It felt daunting and scary because it wasn't a small surgery like doing your eyes or nose, so I kept delaying it.
Then, a really close friend of mine told me that you could get both jaw and facial contouring surgery at the same time at Faceline Plastic Surgery. I tagged along with my friend as his guardian on the day of his surgery because I was worried about him and curious about the results after surgery. I felt really bad seeing him uncomfortable after the surgery and realized once again that this was a tough operation. But when I saw him after nearly a month, I wondered if this was the face I once knew. Unlike what I thought on the first day, he looked natural, masculine, handsome... My friend was also really satisfied with himself even though it had only been a month and really recommended I do it too, so I also ended up going in for a consultation at Faceline Plastic Surgery. The surgeon Dr. Jinsoo Lee explained everything in detail while looking at my X-ray and CT, and he seemed confident about performing surgery. More than anything though, I liked that he understood me well in terms of the direction I wanted the surgery to go. To be honest, the cost of surgery was different from what I had saved up, but after consulting with the consultant, Dr. Jinsoo Lee and Dr. Shinjung Lee, the orthodontist, it only took me a day to decide to get surgery here, thinking I wouldn't get around to doing it anywhere else. What solidified my decision was that the orthodontist and surgeon co-diagnosed together for over 20 years, making them the longest collaborating team in Korea. I also felt really reassured that they were all Seoul National University graduates. Also, it would have been okay to do it at any other plastic surgery clinic if it was just for cosmetic purposes, but choosing the hospital was a more difficult decision for me because I had many functional issues. So it was a perk that I could receive treatment in one location because they also had an orthodontist.
- During the consultation
At the hospital, I filled out a chart first and consulted with a consultant. It was nice to hear that they would take good care of me because I was referred here by a friend. I already trusted the place because my friend referred me here, but when I was explaining how I wanted to end up during the consultation, I only had to describe what direction I wanted, and she grasped what I meant so well and so kindly, which made me trust and like this place even more. Afterwards, I had x-ray and CT shots taken, consulted with the head surgeon Dr. Jinsoo Lee, then received a dental examination at Faceline's dental clinic. So basically, I had malocclusion and a crossbite, a jutting chin, protruding cheekbones and an angular square jaw. I was missing several upper and lower teeth, which I had neglected because I was scared of seeing a dentist. Dr. Shinjung Lee, the orthodontist, explained the current state of my teeth. I needed orthodontic treatment after surgery for the crossbite and that it would be good to get an implant only where necessary was the diagnosis. What I needed was orthognathic surgery, square jaw reduction, and nonelimination lifting cheekbone reduction. I was convinced hearing that I would not only be improved cosmetically but functionally as well from getting orthodontic treatment concurrently, and scheduled the surgery as soon as possible. I wanted to shorten the visits as much as possible, so I had various tests done like a blood test, electrocardiogram, chest x-ray, and whatnot, and went home after listening to everything I needed to know before surgery. I decided after seeing how my friend turned out after Faceline but I was a little nervous deciding to do it myself. But my consultation with Dr. Jinsoo Lee was what made me optimistic that I would also see good results. From what I saw, he was serious and only recommended what was necessary, and I could tell when he was speaking that he really wanted me to end up doing well after surgery. I just really wanted the surgery to go well.
