Hi everyone! It has been about a week and a half since the day of my surgery! There is still some pain and soreness if I press on the sites and hard lumps underneath the skin, but otherwise I'm recovering well! I did not take any painkillers after the 5th day (antibiotics only for 3 days but I bought additional painkillers at the pharmacy)
I want to give back to the community as I have benefited greatly from the reviews of others here, hopefully my sharing here will help someone on their journey as well 😊
Some tips for first timers, especially those doing big areas like the belly or back:
1) Someone here suggested getting sanitary pads (super absorbent night ones are best!) And this was a huge lifesaver! I brought some along with a roll of clingwrap (which is also useful). You can save on luggage space and weight by getting these items from the pharmacies or Daiso in Korea. I had to use more than 10pcs of pads on 2 of the holes that leaked across the night and 1 that continued into the next day.
2) I brought pee pads (2pc) and those came in handy as well. Prepare the bed beforehand, before heading out to do the surgery. I also brought disposable bath towels and face towels - the small towels helped because I started leaking in the cab on the way back to hotel so I was scrambling and using these to soak up the liquid and clean the seat of the cab (discreetly)
3) buy some extra gauze, waterproof plasters and steri strip beforehand (or remember to get more from the pharmacy downstairs when getting your prescribed medication). Body wipes too, because you can't shower for first day!
4) Stock up your fridge with food - pumpkin juice and porridge were my best friends, but I also had coffee, yogurt, milk and some bread.
5) I was pretty much on my own this trip. I think going solo is doable for accessible parts like the arms, face, tummy. But I had difficulty and flexibility issues trying to reach the 2 holes on my lower back. Bear in mind you will have to paste the thin steri strip and waterproof plasters every time you take a shower (and remove them after). So I had an achy neck after a week of straining to turn around and look in the mirror to do this on my own😂 definitely more comfortable having someone around to help after the surgery.
6) I really appreciated having a washing machine in my airbnb apartment - I could immediately wash the liquid/blood stained clothes on the same day. Having a big full length mirror is good too!
7) The cold weather definitely helped! If you can plan your holiday, might be more comfortable to do in the colder months.
My experience:
Several months ago I contacted Olivia through the website and continued through WhatsApp, she answered my queries and I placed a deposit for the surgery at G Clinic. I planned to do my surgery a few days after my consult.
I booked a complimentary consultation on 28th Oct (I landed in Seoul that morning). Was abit late but thankfully, the clinic was accommodating and I had my consult done with Dr Hong. He was transparent and friendly and kind! We could communicate in English. He suggested that I go under sedation for the procedure due to the number of places and amount of fat. I did G Fat liposuction on my arms and back, Ultra G Fat liposuction on my belly and face.
After going through all the precautions I signed a few forms and made an appointment for the surgery a few days later. The receptionist could speak some English and that was sufficient for clear instructions.
I bought some pumpkin juice and porridge from the pharmacy downstairs. Would advise those not doing the surgery on the same day to stock up beforehand (as it is heavy!)
On the day of surgery (day 1):
Had to fast for 8h prior (no water as well), arrived at the clinic on time and was brought to a small room with a locker to store my things. I changed into a gown and was given nipple pasties and a thong. I was then brought into a room to take pictures (Photo 1) and do an ultrasound to see the fat vs the skin layer.
After that we went into the surgery room and I was told to lie down on the table. The sedation IV was placed at my ankle.
The nurses did not speak English, and were curt and gestured directions. Would be nice if they were a little friendlier or reassuring.
They wiped the iodine solution all over and waited for Dr Hong to arrive. He checked in with me if I was feeling OK, I nodded, next thing I knew I was out like a light 😂
I recalled being helped off the table and guided back to the small room and lying down on the bed, but everything was abit fuzzy. I knocked out again for at least another half hour before slowly coming out of the drug induced grogginess.
I was wrapped and taped in many many layers, couldn't bend over, and struggled to wear back my clothes and socks and shoes.
After discharge at the reception counter, I also asked about compression garments and they directed me to Eden Medical (10-15min walk away) to get a custom suit. I only went on the third day after surgery to get measured and get the suits. [More about this below]
Just before leaving the clinic, Dr Hong came out to reassure me everything went well, told me I slept well (I guess I likely snored due to lack of sleep the night before because of nerves😂) I had 8 holes in total - 2 each on the face, elbows, tummy and back.
I headed downstairs to the pharmacy to get the prescribed medicine and took a cab back to my hotel.
It was about 4 hours in total, from stepping foot into the clinic to leaving.
The holes at my back and my tummy were leaking when I got back, so I removed the clothes and bandages.
The cloth plaster bandages from the clinic were veeery sticky and painful to remove. I changed the steri strips that came off and replaced new ones and taped on the pads and clingwrap.
When I looked into the mirror I got a shock; I can't believe the clinic let me step out and leave with iodine on half my face and forehead 😞
I had some bread and milk and took the medication, watched YouTube and read books in bed for the rest of the day. By nighttime, only the holes on the tummy and 1 elbow were still oozing and I had to change the strip, gauze, bandages several times. As the anaesthesia wore off, it felt as though I did a million ab crunches and even sitting up to get out of bed was painful, but the moment I'm up on my feet and moving it felt ok.
By next morning only the elbow was oozing slightly and 1 of the holes at the tummy was still leaking, so I changed those and headed out to buy back coffee and breakfast from a nearby cafe. I rested for most part of the afternoon, before heading out to meet my friend for dinner some distance away.
From Day 3 onward, I was doing full day tours and shopping and clocking at least 15k steps a day, albeit walking abit slowly. Other than avoiding alcohol, I pretty much ate almost anything without dietary restrictions.
The bruising was bad but not as painful as it looks, and I believe all the walking helped with the circulation; the bruising discoloration pretty much all went away within the week. Now it just feels like a big bruise inside when I press the areas. Photos 3,4,5 were taken on Day 3 - Definitely noticeable reduction in the arms and tummy.
Compression garments
Eden Medical seems to be a family business, I had my measurements taken and chose the designs I wanted. The lady boss was friendly and accommodating, and I arranged to have the suits couriered to my airbnb for a small fee, as I had a day out planned and did not want to return to Sinsa 4h later just to pick them up. The suits are snug but fit perfect.
It costs about 130,000-180,000won per piece - well worth the price in my opinion. On hindsight, I should have asked on the consultation day and gone to make the suits then, so that I don't have to make another trip to Sinsa just for this.
I highly recommend anyone still considering this procedure to take the leap of faith and get those pesky fat deposits sucked out by Dr Hong at G Clinic 😄 the holes are tiny and minimal scarring - his skills are great!
Lastly, a big thank you to Dr Hong and G Clinic! I can't wait to see the final results in a few months 😊
