Sorry for the delay everyone! This is my 2 out of 3 reviews on my experience with TFD. You can check out my consultation experience in my first review. Warning—this review will be unnecessarily long!
As a reminder, I got chin implant removal, genioplasty, and neck liposuction. Attached are my before and after pictures based on today’s date!
Surgery Day:
As I recall, the surgery day was an overwhelming experience. Once I arrived for my surgery at 9 am, I was immediately led to another floor to change out of my clothes, wash my face, etc. Afterward, I had another quick consultation with Dr. Lee to confirm my procedures and make my payment. Lastly, I was led to the surgery room. Everything was happening so fast that I did not even have the time to feel nervous! There, I met the anesthesiologist (a woman who wasn’t the one listed on his team) and was guided to the table. She kindly put my hair up in a bun for me while one of the nurses was slapping my hand to put the IV. The slapping hurt and I knew my hand would bruise because of it, but the feeling of the anesthesia going up my arm hurt more. Like what the anesthesiologist said—a sharp sting! I immediately fell asleep after.
I woke up to the sound of a woman telling me not to fall asleep. I vaguely remember being pushed into a wheelchair and helped to go on the bed. I had a sore throat and dry mouth but I remember not feeling any pain—just a lot of discomfort when talking and an intense need to sleep. I asked for the bed to be inclined 90° degrees so that I wouldn’t fall asleep. There was a table in front of me that I used to watch videos on my phone to stay awake and an IV stand attached to me. The IV bag was filled with nutrients, vitamins, and pain medication.
For the first hour, my mouth kept filling up with blood. The nurse suctioned my mouth the first two times it happened, but the third time it happened, she said I can just swallow it. I hated that, so I just spat it into tissues instead.
After the second hour, the bleeding subsided but I was still feeling sleepy. I had to hyper-focus on my phone to avoid falling asleep. The nurse used Papago to ask for my credit card to use to buy my prescriptions at the nearby pharmacy. I’m glad that I kept it in my gown pocket when I paid for the surgery beforehand because it would have been such a hassle to find it in my backpack otherwise! When the nurse returned, she instructed me on my prescriptions.
In the third hour, I am finally waking up a little more and started doing little walks around the floor with my IV stand. I took little walks every 20 minutes or so. Pretty sure the nurse taught me how to use the face compression and ice/heat pack they provide during this time. She also told me that she expects that I will be discharged earlier because I’m doing so well.
During the fourth hour, I took another small walk before I get my X-Rays taken. Afterward, I changed into my clothes, got my belongings, and prepared to meet Dr. Lee to talk about the surgery together. Using the before and after X-rays, he showed me how he moved my chin forward by 8mm and down by 3mm. We also talked about post-care, etc. Afterward, I ordered a taxi to my Airbnb, where I remained for my entire recovery period.
Recovery:
On Day 0 and Day 1, I was almost bedridden but not necessarily in pain. At the time, I was not swelling too much but I had a sore throat that kept me up at night and prevented me from talking. I also had no appetite but worked hard to maintain my liquid intake. The only issue I had during this time as when I had to remove the gauze from my liposuction suture. I had to remove all the gauze except for a small square of it that remained on the suture site. This was incredibly hard to remove and I had to go slow because I was scared about accidentally removing the small square and potentially reopening my suture!
On Days 2 and 3, my face started to swell and my neck started to bruise. However, the sore throat went away and I was able to talk again. At my follow-up appointment, they gave me red-light therapy (which kind of tingles your skin a little!) to help speed up the healing process. However, Dr. Lee told me that I am healing much better than most patients. I contribute this to pineapple juice, pumpkin soup, and arnica and bromelain pills! They also gave me further instructions that did not exactly follow the written instructions they gave me on Day 0 (e.g., differences in how long to use cold packs, eat, etc.). I wish they updated the written instructions to avoid the confusion I had at times!
On Days 4 and 5, my swelling went down and I started eating more soft foods. By Day 7, I carefully ate whatever I wanted and looked relatively normal except for my bruising. I had bruising on my hand from when they put the IV in, on the corners of my mouth, and most noticeably, my neck. My neck bruises became much bigger and refused to go away for almost 3 weeks after. Thankfully, the bruises did not hurt!
Present:
I am now almost two months post-op and am quite satisfied with my results. I can see the difference and am happy about how natural my chin looks. Part of me wishes that I went with jaw shaving too because you can see in the after picture that my left side looks bigger than the right. I also have notches/indents from the genioplasty that appears at some angles. Additionally, my neck still looked a little chubby on my side profile.
However, I am glad that I chose against jaw shaving because I was able to heal quicker since my surgeries were less invasive. I would much rather be safe than mildly asymmetrical! Additionally, Dr. Lee told me that bone will grow and fill in those notches/indents over time, leading to a more natural-looking result that I just need to wait patiently for. Regarding my neck fat, I suppose I can just try to lose a little more weight! Overall, I think the pros outweigh the cons and would recommend Dr. Lee for your facial contouring needs!
